Advanced Cake Decorating Classes

by Lindsay in Advanced Cake Decorating

There are an abundance of cake decorating classes for experienced professionals and enthusiasts. Master classes explore theory and technique in depth over several weeks or months. Shorter workshops explore specific cake decorating techniques and projects. There are many benefits to be gained from taking classes.

Benefits of In Depth Courses

Taking an in depth program can serve as a refresher and fill in any gaps in your skills. The certificate earned on completion will boost your credibility for employment or business.

If you are thinking of converting a cake decorating hobby into a business, or if you already are in business, taking an in depth course will boost your profile. The course will help you to build and diversify your portfolio of successful cake designs. You will meet other professionals–not only faculty, but other students, who may be excellent references.

Studying will be an enormous source of inspiration. You will expand your opportunities to share cake decorating ideas, tips, and techniques with others. You will be able to explore and review traditional techniques plus new ones that have emerged in recent years.

Benefits of Shorter Programs

When you take a shorter program you can be more selective as to what you study. There are so many different types of projects and techniques that an experienced cake decorator might want to explore. For example:

  • Wedding cakes
  • Coca painting
  • Gum paste art
  • Marzipan figurines
  • Cake sculptures
  • Fondant cutouts
  • Intricate lacework and flowers
  • Airbrush painting
  • Edible ink photo transfers
  • String work methods.

Learning for Business

A short cake decorating course is ideal when you are considering a new specialty or business niche. It will allow you to strengthen your niche skills in a short period of time.

Some cake decorating courses include instructions on how to run a business. You can learn about basics such as financing, how to develop a business plan, government regulations, commercial equipment and supplies, inventory management, display, storage, and transport.

Staying on Top of Current Trends

Taking cake decorating classes from time to time is an excellent way to stay current. Whether you are looking for new ideas to dazzle your friends, or you are an entrepreneur, ongoing learning helps you to keep up with changing fashions. For example, recent trends include wedding cakes made out of cupcakes, vibrant colors, gum paste art, sculptures, and cupcakes for a wide range of social occasions.

Where to Look for Courses

Advanced classes are offered by community colleges, private culinary schools, local bake shops. large arts and crafts stores, and large food craft stores.

An online course is another option. Online cake decorating programs offer step-by-step video instructions and opportunities to network with expert instructors and colleagues. They are very flexible as you can study at any time of the night or day in the comfort of your home.
