Beginners Cake Decorating Classes
by Lindsay in Introductory Cake Decorating
How often have you wished that you could decorate a birthday cake or make a special Halloween cake? Have you resorted to buying store-bought cakes simply because you lack confidence in your own skills? Or perhaps you are looking for a creative outlet? Taking cake decorating classes is an excellent way to learn an art that will bring pleasure you can share with family and friends.
What Will I Learn In An Introductory Course?
Every cake decorating class is slightly different, but basics often include:
- what tools and ingredients to purchase;
- how to make and level a cake;
- how to make different icing consistencies;
- how to frost a cake smoothly;
- how to use a bag and tip; and
- how to make flowers and borders.
By the end of the course you will feel more confident and ready to try out your new skills at home. You may even have some exciting cake decorating ideas for an upcoming special occasion, such as a birthday party, Halloween, or a wedding shower.
Cake Decorating Can Be a Hobby or Creative Outlet
Cake decorating involves imaginative use of color, shapes, textures, and ingredients. There are many different ways to express yourself with cake decoration, whether or not you have special artistic talents.
If you go to a bulk food supply store you will see all the different candies that you can put on a cake to create designs and images. If you are interested in sculpturing, you can learn how to cut out shapes and layers. You can also use different objects such as cookies and ice cream cones to add dimension. The possibilities are endless. A cake decorating course will show you how to put ideas like these into action.
As an artist you may be interested in creating stencils, and working with brushes and sculpting tools. These cake decorating techniques are not for everyone; but this may be something you want to try.
Cake Decorating Skills Bring Joy to Special Occasions
Some beginners want to create high quality desserts at a reasonable price. They enjoy working in the kitchen and surprising friends and families with unique creations. Birthdays, showers, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Mother’s Day, and engagements are just some of the special occasions that call for cakes.
How Can I Find a Cake Decorating Course?
Depending on where you live, cake decorating classes can be easy to find. They are offered by many large arts and crafts stores, food arts stores, local bake shops, community centers, and community colleges.
Beginner classes are also available on the internet. Online decorating courses provide step-by-step video instruction and email access to an instructor and other students. One key benefit of an online course is that you can study at any time of the day or night without having to leave home.
If you discover that cake decorating is for you, you probably will want to take more classes. Taking a course from time to time will inspire you with new cake decorating tips and ideas.

Tina,
I don’t run a cake decorating class, I have created this site as a resource for cake decorators looking for both local and online cake decorating classes.
I do have a directory of local cake decorating classes on my site, which may be of interest to you.

Hi Kimberly,
There are lots of resources and courses available. You may want to check out my cake decorating blog directory under the tutorial tag http://www.cakedecoratingclasses.org/cake-decorating-blogs/tags/cake-decorating-tutorials/ for online tutorials. And all blogs are great places to visit and find inspiration.
If you are looking for a local cake decorating class you check back to the site in a few weeks, I will be launching a local classes directory. Alternatively you can use google, sometimes the results are hard to find, but they are out there. You may also want to read about online cake decorating classes, http://www.cakedecoratingclasses.org/online-cake-decorating-classes/ which are a great alternative to attending a class.
